Sweet Potato Cheese Whole Roast (Print)

Tender roasted sweet potatoes stuffed with melted cheese and seasoned for a warm, satisfying dish.

# Components:

→ Vegetables

01 - 4 medium sweet potatoes (approximately 8.8 oz each), scrubbed

→ Dairy

02 - 7 oz shredded cheese (mozzarella, cheddar, or blend)
03 - 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened

→ Seasonings

04 - 1 tsp sea salt
05 - ½ tsp black pepper
06 - ½ tsp smoked paprika (optional)
07 - 1 tbsp chopped fresh chives or parsley (optional, for garnish)

# Directions:

01 - Preheat the oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
02 - Pierce each sweet potato several times with a fork. Rub with softened butter and sprinkle with sea salt.
03 - Place sweet potatoes on the prepared baking sheet and roast for 50 to 60 minutes, or until tender when pierced with a knife.
04 - Remove from oven and let cool slightly. Slice each sweet potato lengthwise without cutting fully through. Gently push the ends toward each other to open them. Fluff the interior with a fork, then season with black pepper and smoked paprika if using.
05 - Fill each sweet potato with 1.75 oz shredded cheese. Return to oven for 5 to 7 minutes until cheese melts and bubbles.
06 - Remove from oven, garnish with chopped chives or parsley if desired, and serve hot, holding the sweet potato with both hands like a sandwich.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • Roasted sweet potato flesh becomes creamy and almost dessert-like, then the melted cheese brings savory depth that surprises you.
  • It's genuinely faster than most main dishes yet feels indulgent enough for when you've had a long day.
  • No skill required, just patience while the oven does the work.
02 -
  • Don't skip piercing the potatoes or steam builds up inside and they can burst. I learned this the loud way.
  • If you slice all the way through and separate the halves, the cheese leaks out onto the pan. Keep them slightly hinged.
03 -
  • Buy potatoes that are roughly the same size so they finish roasting at the same moment, not staggered.
  • The melting step at the end is quick, so set a timer because the difference between perfectly melted and slightly overcooked is just a couple of minutes.
